Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused the US of creating ISIS in order to keep the region “busy” with internal war, distracting it from Israel. Khamenei also blamed the US for lying about its fight against the terrorist group.
In a speech marking the Persian New Year on Wednesday, the Islamic republic’s leader further claimed that Washington had no incentive to defeat ISIS and was incapable of stabilizing the region. Khamenei claimed Tehran was responsible for restoring security to the Middle East, thus defeating “the Americans’ plot.”
“The Islamic Republic has managed to restore security in the region and it will be the same in future,” Khamenei said, as quoted by Tehran’s semi-official Fars News Agency. “The US will no doubt fail to achieve its objectives with regard to the regional issues and the Islamic Republic of Iran will, God willing, accomplish all its goals in the region."
On Monday, US President Donald Trump wished Iranians “a beautiful and blessed Nowruz,” referring to the Persian New Year that is celebrated by millions around the world. “The history of Nowruz is rooted in Iran, where for millennia a proud nation has overcome great challenges by the strength of its culture and the resilience of its people,” Trump said in a statement. “Today, the Iranian people face another challenge: rulers who serve themselves instead of serving the people.”
Trump also accused Tehran’s IRGC of being a “hostile army that brutalizes and steals from the Iranian people to fund terrorism abroad,” adding that “deceit has become official state policy” in Iran. The US president ended his statement in a holiday greeting in Persian: “Nowruz Pirouz.”
