Korean leaders Kim and Moon meet amid uncertainty surrounding US-NK summitThe surprise meeting came shortly after US President Trump tweeted that the cancelled summit may be back on.
Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in, the leaders of North and South Korea, met on Saturday to discuss ways to salvage the summit with US President Donald Trump.
The government of South Korea said in a statement that the two leaders "expressed their desire to make the summit with the US a successful one."
Last month, Kim and Moon held the first inter-Korean meeting in a decade and pledged to work together to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and end the war. They also agreed to send top representatives of their armies to meet in order to "decrease the hostility" between the nations.
Trump on Thursday cancelled the much-anticipated summit over recent statements from North Korea, but on Saturday he tweeted that the summit may still happen.
"We are having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the summit," Trump tweeted, adding that the original date set for it, June 12, is the most likely option. "...if necessary, (it) will be extended beyond that date."
