Belarus: Locals gather outside Shimon Peres' childhood home to commemorate himResidents of Vishnyeva, formerly Wiszniew in Poland, held a small ceremony in honor of Peres.
Dozens of locals in the Belarusian town of Vishnyeva gathered on Wednesday to pay their respect to Shimon Peres, who was born in the town in 1923 when it was still part of Poland.
The locals held a small ceremony outside the house where Peres grew up before his family immigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1932. "Peres was the greatest man ever to have come out of our village," said one of them. "He gave us pride through his life achievements and we will never forget that."
In 2013, as part of his 90th birthday preparations, Peres visited the village and launched a photo exhibit of his childhood.
