Sources involved in the investigation into Tuesday afternoon’s pickup truck-ramming attack in Manhattan have announced that Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, a 29-year-old Uzbek national, was the driver who murdered eight people and injured 11 others. Saipov drove the rental pickup truck on a popular bike path, striking pedestrians and cyclists, before crashing into a school bus.

A senior NYPD officer told CNN that a note written in English was discovered in the truck and that it claimed that the attack was carried out in the name of ISIS. CNN also reported that Saipov had been an Uber driver for the past six months and had lived in several states since coming to the US in 2010.

"This is a very painful day in our city," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stated. “Based on the information we have at this moment, this was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians...who had no idea what was about to hit them.”

New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro explained that six people were declared dead at the scene while the other two were pronounced dead at the hospital. He added that while the 11 injured people who were transported to the hospital suffered serious injuries, they are expected to survive.
