This evening (Wednesday), Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announced their next ambitious move. Over the next decade, they plan on donating $3 billion in an attempt to eliminate disease from the world by the end of the century.

The couple intends for their generous donation to be utilized towards medical research which will hopefully develop vaccinations, artificial devices for organs and improve chemotherapy. “This is not something that we simply read about in a book and decided to do,” said Zuckerberg.

The young couple made the announcement from their California home and they hope that their move will motivate scientists, engineers and medical personnel to cooperate with one another. According to Zuckerberg, scientists estimate that humans will always get sick and we should therefore invest in treatment processes rather than disease prevention.
