Soccer star Lionel Messi saves Argentina, qualifies to World CupDespite a disappointing campaign, Argentina’s national soccer team stepped up to the occasion and with the help of superstar Lionel Messi beat Ecuador and qualified for the 2018 World Cup. The US failed to qualify.
Yesterday (Tuesday), after only 38 seconds of soccer, Argentina’s dream to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup was farther away than ever. Ecuador had just scored and it seemed that Argentina’s disastrous campaign wasn’t over. However, as always, legendary Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi came to the rescue.
Reminding everyone why he is possibly the best player in the history of the game, Messi scored the equalizer in the 12th minute following a brilliant breakaway. He didn’t wait too long and scored the second goal after only 8 minutes. ‘The flea’ didn’t stop there and completed a hat-trick with a beautiful chip over the goalie in the 62nd minute, thus preventing Argentina from embarrassment.
The big disappointment of the night turned out to be the South American champion Chile, who lost the chance to qualify to the World Cup in Russia after suffering from a defeat to Brazil. The US also failed at the moment of truth and was eliminated after a 2:1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago. In addition to Brazil and Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia both qualified from South America.
These are the rest of the teams that have qualified: Russia, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Belgium, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Germany, England, Spain, Nigeria, Costa Rica, Poland, Egypt, Iceland, Serbia, Portugal, France and Honduras.
