New on Tinder: 40 gender options for transgender users

When Tinder discovered that transgender users get verbally harassed, they decided to respond by updating the application so that users can choose between 40 gender identity options and add their own if necessary.

The dating application Tinder officially welcomed transgender people by adding multiple identity options other than male or female. The company initiated the move after hearing reports of transgender users being abused on the application. The update seems of great importance especially today (Sunday), on the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day that commemorates those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia.

According to Tinder CEO Sean Rad, the management first heard about the problem seven months ago. They discovered that transgender users experienced verbal abuse from their “matches” and were often reported as problematic users just for being transgender, something that led to automatically getting blocked as a result of the algorithm.

The company created the update with the assistance of leading figures from the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community. They hope that the feature will make it easier for members of the community to safely find a relationship.
