The first Muslim woman judge in the US, who also happens to be the first African American woman appointed to the New York Court of Appeals, was found dead last night (Wednesday) in the Hudson River. The cause of her death is still unclear.

The NYPD stated that the body of 65-year-old Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam was found floating in the Hudson River near Harlem in Manhattan. Police removed Abdus-Salaam’s fully dressed body from the river and pronounced her dead at the scene. The NYPD claims that no signs of abuse were found on her body and that at this point in time, the suspicion of murder has been ruled out.

Abdus-Salaam’s family members identified her body, which was sent for autopsy in order to determine her cause of death.

In 2013, Abdus-Salaam became the first African American Muslim woman to be appointed to the New York Court of Appeals.
