Nikki Haley at emergency meeting: Kim Jong-un is 'begging for war'During an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley stated that "the time has come to exhaust diplomatic means before it's too late" and said that the leader of the isolated country is “begging for war.”
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is “begging for war” during an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Monday. Haley stressed that the US does not wish for war, saying: “War is never something the United States wants. We don’t want it now. But our country’s patience is not unlimited.”
“Twenty-four years of half measures and failed talks is enough,” Haley told the Security Council. "The time has come to exhaust diplomatic means before it's too late."
The Chinese ambassador called for North Korea to cease activities that are escalating the situation, adding that Kim's actions are not even in his country's interests. He also said that Beijing will not permit chaos and war to reign in the Korean Peninsula.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "counts on the Security Council to remain united and take appropriate action," according to his political adviser, Jeffrey Feltman, who told the Security Council that “as tensions rise, so does the risk of misunderstanding, miscalculation and escalation."
"The latest serious developments require a comprehensive response in order to break the cycle of provocations from (North Korea),” said Feltman. “Such a response must include wise and bold diplomacy to be effective."
