According to the American news agency United Press International, many North Korean senior citizens are being encouraged by their younger relatives to commit suicide. The news agency reported today (Sunday) that the main reasons behind this phenomenon are the high prices of medicine in the isolated dictatorship and the financial and emotional burden the elderly North Koreans impose on their younger family members.

North Korea does not have a strong welfare system and it barely provides resources to the country’s senior citizens. According to Radio Free Asia, the younger relatives are indifferent to the senior citizens’ needs.

A North Korean source told the news agency that it is not rare to see large groups of senior citizens aimlessly wondering the streets. The source said that the senior citizens are sometimes in areas where the temperatures are extremely low.  “It’s heartbreaking to see them there,” he said. “Some of them even served in the Korean War.”
