North Korea will send a delegation to the 2018 Winter Olympics being hosted by the South in February, South Korean officials announced on Tuesday. The breakthrough declaration came after the two countries held their first formal talks in over two years.
Pyongyang said it will send athletes, supporters, art performers, journalists and high-ranking officials to the games, which will be held in Pyeongchang next month, according to South Korea’s Unification Ministry. Seoul also proposed that the two Koreas march together during the opening ceremony and offered to continue negotiations on military and nuclear issues. The South said it is considering the possibility of easing sanctions against its northern neighbor during the games.
The tentative diplomatic thawing came after Northern leader Kim Jong-un addressed Seoul in a conciliatory tone in his New Year’s address, saying his country is “considering the possibility” of participating in the upcoming games. In response, South Korea offered to hold high-level talks on the matter. On Wednesday, Pyongyang called Seoul on the direct communication line between the Koreas, which had been dormant for almost two years.
