North Korea launches ballistic missile into Japan’s territorial watersThe U.S. Army has confirmed that North Korea carried out a ballistic missile test early Tuesday morning. The missile landed off the coast of Japan after flying for 40 minutes. Later today, the regime in Pyongyang is expected to make a “special announcement.”
Shortly after South Korea announced that Pyongyang launched an unidentified projectile that landed in the Sea of Japan on Tuesday, the U.S. Army confirmed the report. The U.S. Pacific Command stated that the projectile was an intermediate-range ballistic missile that was tracked for 37 minutes. “The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) assessed that the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America,” the U.S. Pacific Command said in a statement. Japan reported that the missile was in the air for 40 minutes.
However, in contrast to the Japanese and American reports, North Korea claims that it successfully tested an intercontinental missile. “The launch was carried out under the supervision of superior leader Kim Jong-un and the missile can reach any place in the world,” Pyongyang said in a statement. The regime added that the missile reached an altitude of about 2,800 kilometers and precisely hit its target after 39 minutes.
“North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy [Kim] have anything better to do with his life?” Trump wrote on Twitter in response to the missile launch. “Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!”
The South Korean military reported that the ballistic missile was launched from North Korea’s east coast. Japanese media outlets reported that the missile most likely landed in the country’s territorial waters.
Meanwhile, North Korea announced that it will make an important announcement later today but the regime did not give additional information. South Korean President Moon Jae-in called for an emergency meeting of the country’s security council in light of the missile launch.
