More information is being discovered about the Orlando shooter’s past: A man who was interviewed by an American news agency claimed that he was in an intimate relationship with Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people at Orlando’s Pulse gay nightclub about a week and a half ago. The Hispanic man, identified only as Miguel, was interviewed by Univision and said that the two were lovers. Miguel also talked about how he reacted to the news about the attack: “I’ve cried like you have no idea. But the thing that makes me want to tell the truth is that he didn’t do it for terrorism. In my opinion he did it for revenge.”

Miguel said that he met Mateen through the gay dating App Grindr. According to Miguel, they met up about 15-20 times- until they stopped seeing each other in December 2015, when Miguel left Orlando. Miguel said that he knew that Mateen was married to a woman and had a child.

Miguel said that the two were “friends with benefits” and that Mateen was “100 percent gay.” Miguel said that he was shocked to find out that his former lover was the killer: “He was a very sweet guy. He loved to be cuddled.”

Miguel claimed that Mateen’s hatred towards Puerto Rican homosexual men is what motivated him to carry out the attack. According to Miguel, Mateen slept with two guy Puerto Rican men, one of whom revealed to him that he was HIV positive after the intercourse. “He adored Latinos, gay Latinos, with brown skin – but he felt rejected. He felt used by them,” Miguel explained. Miguel also said that 29-year-old Mateen “was terrified that he was infected.”

According to Miguel, when he talked to Mateen about the incident, Mateen said: “I’m going to make them pay for what they did to me.” The FBI confirmed that Mateen was questioned by agents about his intimate relationship with Mateen. Miguel’s statements strengthen the assessment that Mateen was a closeted gay man who sought revenge on the homosexual community.
