PA spokesperson claims US envoy to Israel not contributing to creation of peace

According to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman’s remarks are the source of the current “crisis in US-Palestinian relations,” which began immediately following US President Donald Trump’s Jerusalem recognition.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh responded on Wednesday to a tweet in which US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman slammed the leadership in Ramallah. “The statements by the US ambassador lead us to wonder about the ambassador’s relationship with the occupation: Does he represent the US or Israel?” Abu Rudeineh said, as quoted by the PA’s official news agency Wafa.

“The ambassador’s advice and consultations, which are not aimed at achieving a just peace based on international legality, have led to this crisis in US-Palestinian relations,” he added. “Rather than contributing to the creation of atmospheres for peace, Ambassador Friedman is instead making the situation more tense by providing pretexts for such acts of violence, which we reject.”

In a tweet on Tuesday, Friedman condemned the terror attack in which 29-year-old Itamar Ben-Gal was murdered. “20 years ago I gave an ambulance to Har Bracha hoping it would be used to deliver healthy babies. Instead, a man from Har Bracha was just murdered by a terrorist, leaving behind a wife and four children. Palestinian “leaders” have praised the killer,” he wrote.

The relations between Washington and Ramallah considerably deteriorated after US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital on December 6. Earlier this week, JerusalemOnline reported that Abbas and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to discuss the possibility of replacing the Middle East Quartet with a new peace negotiations mechanism. The Quartet is composed of the United Nations, the European Union, America and Russia.
