PA accepted as INTERPOL member
PA calls its new INTERPOL membership a 'moral duty towards the citizens of the world'Shortly after 75% of INTERPOL's member states voted in favor of admitting the Palestinian Authority as a member state of the international body, PA officials celebrated in Ramallah. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said the PA's reason for joining was due to the Palestinian people's "responsibility" to the world.
Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki on Wednesday welcomed INTERPOL’s decision to include the Palestinian Authority as a member state of the organization. "The facts and benefits have overcome the risks," al-Maliki said. "The State of Palestine considers joining the organization as a responsibility of the Palestinian people, as part of our moral duty towards the citizens of the world."
According to al-Maliki, the Palestinian victory was made possible because of most of the member states’ principled positions. The Palestinian foreign minister added in an interview with the Palestinian press that the joining of the Palestinian Authority is the result of countries that choose to defend the existence of INTERPOL and promote the body's basic values.
Al-Maliki also stated that the countries that voted in favor chose to reject cynical manipulations and political bullying from those who tried to delay the Palestinians' acceptance into INTERPOL, hinting at Israel and the US. "In the name of the Palestinian people, I want to express deep gratitude to all those involved in making this happen,” he said.
Despite the heavy diplomatic pressure from Israel’s National Security Council, Foreign Affairs Ministry and Strategic Affairs Ministry, the Palestinian Authority’s request to join INTERPOL was approved. 75% of the member states voted in favor of the bid while only 24 opposed it.
In accordance with its new status, the Palestinian Authority will now be able to issue international arrest warrants for IDF officers and obtain sensitive information about the fight against terrorism. The status of the Palestinians will be identical to that of the Israel Police.
