Polish Prime Minister: “There were Polish perpetrators, as there were Jewish perpetrators”Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki elaborated on the Polish Holocaust Bill as he experienced backlash at Munich Security Conference, sparking more controversy with his remarks. Morawiecki said that it would not be illegal to acknowledge that “there were Polish perpetrators as there were Jewish perpetrators.”
On Saturday, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki defended the controversial Holocaust Bill to Jewish Israeli reporter Ronen Bergman of Yedioth Ahronoth at the Munich Security Conference. Bregman spoke of his mother, a Holocaust survivor born in Poland, and asked the prime minister whether he would face criminal charges if he talked about her. He further asked what message Poland was striving to send by imposing this law.
Morawiecki responded to Bergman and said that the German Nazis had perpetrators from other countries and nationalities. “There were Polish perpetrators, as there were Jewish perpetrators," he said.
The Polish prime minister has been under fire due to the controversial law and was trying to clarify that only someone who claimed that there were Polish extermination camps would be punished.
The Prime Minister later described the Polish people's efforts to save Jews during the war. “On the Polish soil, this was the only place on earth where all the families, all the neighbors, all the villagers were killed for helping our Jewish brothers and sisters,” said Morawiecki.
Zionist Camp leader Avi Gabbay stated, "Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki speaks like the last Holocaust denier. The blood of millions of Jews cries out from Polish soil about the distortion of history and the escape from guilt. Jews were murdered in the Holocaust and Poles took an active part in their murder. The government of Israel must be here for the millions of those murdered and condemn the words of the Polish prime minister harshly."
