Report: Comey was fired days after asking for larger budget to investigate alleged Russia-Trump ties

Even though U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that he fired FBI Director James Comey because “he wasn't doing a good job,” the New York Times reported that Comey asked for a larger budget to investigate the alleged ties between Trump’s campaign and Moscow last week.

According to the New York Times, FBI Director James Comey was fired just a few days after he asked for a larger budget in order to fund the investigation into the alleged ties between Trump’s campaign and Moscow. Meanwhile, Trump said that Comey was fired because “he wasn't doing a good job.”

An official in Trump’s administration said that the U.S. president is looking into four possible temporary replacements. One of them will be appointed until a permanent replacement is found.

According to U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Trump’s decision to remove Comey from his position “was based solely and exclusively on his commitment to the best interests of the American people.” Pence added that Trump made the “right decision” and denied the claims that the decision was related to the investigation into the alleged ties between Trump’s campaign and Moscow.

Meanwhile, Democratic senators voiced their demand again today that a special prosecutor be appointed to deal with the investigation. According to the Senate Intelligence Committee, Comey’s termination will seriously delay the investigation.

Earlier today, Trump responded for the first time to the political storm that erupted following his sudden decision. In a series of tweets, Trump addressed the criticism voiced by Democratic senators: “The Democrats have said some of the worst things about James Comey, including the fact that he should be fired, but now they play so sad!”
