Report: Global generosity decreased, Africa with surpriseAccording to this year’s World Giving Index, global generosity of countries decreased. Myanmar leads the chart, based on monetary donations, volunteering time and helping strangers.
According to the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index, Myanmar is the most generous country in the world for the fourth consecutive year. This is the eighth year that the report was released and is based on approximately 150 thousand participants from 139 countries. The report focused on monetary donations, volunteering time and helping strangers.
Myanmar’s ranking likely stems from small, fixed donations that many citizens in the country give to monks, despite the country’s medium-low average income. However, almost all of the countries, including Myanmar, have decreased their donations over the past year. Myanmar is followed by Indonesia, Kenya, New Zealand, the US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UAE and the Netherlands.
CAF officials clarified that the study was done during the months of June and July, prior to the election of US President Donald Trump, an event which led to many donations to social organizations in the US and an increase in volunteering in these organizations.
“This year’s Index results are slightly down on last year’s but it’s too early to know if this is a cause for real concern,” stated CAF CEO Sir John Low. “It does remind us that our global culture of generosity should never be taken for granted.”
