Special counsel Robert Mueller’s office told US President Donald Trump’s legal team that it will likely seek to interview the president as part of the probe into the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, according to a report in the Washington Post on Monday. The report cites a source close to Trump saying that Mueller’s team could interview the president possibly within the upcoming weeks.

According to the anonymous source speaking to the Washington Post, Trump has no issues participating in such an interview, believing it will quiet claims of his campaign’s involvement with Russia. “This is moving faster than anyone really realizes,” the person was quoted as saying. If carried out, the interview will likely include only a limited set of questions.

“The White House does not comment on communications with the OSC [Office of Special Counsel] out of respect for the OSC and its process,“ Trump’s legal team told news outlets. “The White House is continuing its full cooperation with the OSC in order to facilitate the earliest possible resolution.”

US intelligence agencies continue to probe into the integrity of the 2016 election. Trump has repeatedly denied allegations of collusion with Russia. In a post on his Twitter account on Friday, the president said the collusion is “proving to be a total hoax.” Russia has also denied the claims.
