Report: Satellite images reveal new Iranian base near Damascus in SyriaNew satellite images have revealed another Iranian base northwest of Damascus that includes missile storage facilities, according to a report by Fox News on Tuesday. The complex is believed to be operated by Iranian special forces and to contain hangars used for short and medium-range missiles, which may be capable of reaching Israel.
Iran has established another permanent military base on the outskirts of Syria’s capital, said a Tuesday night report by Fox News. According to the report, intelligence officials believe the base includes two new storage facilities for short and medium-range missiles that may be capable of reaching most areas in Israel.
Details about the base were obtained from satellite images in which the facilities can be seen about 12km (8 miles) northwest of Damascus. The complex is estimated to be operated by Iran’s Quds Force, a special forces unit of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that operates overseas.
Earlier this month, A New York Times report claimed that Iran has 10 military bases throughout Syria. Three of the big bases were key facilities for overseeing military operations and seven were smaller tactical ones located along several front lines in Syria.
Israel has repeatedly warned against the increasing Iranian presence in Syria. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif responded this month to the accusations and denied that Tehran has established bases in the war-torn country. Zarif told reporters that Iran has not sent military forces to Syria for combat purposes, but that it only sent military advisors to aid the Syrian government.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Munich Security Conference threatened that “Israel will not allow the regime to put a noose of terror around our neck, we will act if necessary not just against Iran's proxies but against Iran itself.” In response, Zarif said: “Well, if they try to exercise that threat, they will see the response.”
