Federal investigators are reviewing conversations about people close to US President Donald Trump from as far back as 2015 that were held by Russian government officials, according to the Wall Street Journal. The American newspaper cited former and current US officials. Earlier this week, it was reported that the President’s son, Donald Trump Jr., met with a Russian lawyer suspected of having ties to the Kremlin during 2016.

In some of the conversations intercepted by the US intelligence agencies, the Russian officials are heard discussing meetings outside of the US held by Russian government officials and several of Trump’s business partners and advisors. The review of these conversations was part of the routine activity of the US intelligence agencies, and it is not unusual for Moscow officials to discuss foreigners with financial interests in Russia.

The investigations into these conversations were reopened following the discovery of the 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, Trump’s campaign manager and the Russian lawyer. The investigators are now searching for new leads in these conversations about the alleged cooperation between Trump and Russian officials in the presidential election. Trump himself has denied any and all allegations regarding this matter, calling them “a witch hunt."
