Russia announces expulsion of 60 US diplomats amid growing rift with West

In a tit-for-tat move, the Kremlin on Thursday announced that 60 US diplomats were given until April 5 to leave Russia, further escalating an ongoing rift with the West over the poisoning of a former Russian spy in the UK.

Russia announced on Thursday that 60 US diplomats will be required to leave the country within a week and that the American consulate in St. Petersburg will be closed down.

The move came in response to the expulsion of over 150 Russian diplomats by the US and many of its European allies following the poisoning of Sergei Skripal, a former Russian spy, in the UK.

Earlier this week, Moscow once again denied having had any involvement in the poisoning, claiming that "very powerful forces" in the US and the UK are behind it.

Last week, US President Donald Trump announced the expulsion of 60 Russian diplomats, leading to a succession of similar announcements by 15 other countries.

Meanwhile, the hospital in Salisbury in which Skripal and his daughter are hospitalized reported an improvement for both of them. Skripal's daughter, Yulia, is reportedly no longer in a life-threatening condition.
