Russia: Female TV personality nominated to run against Putin in upcoming presidential electionA liberal Russian party has nominated a female TV personality as its candidate to run for president against Vladimir Putin. The election is set for March 2018. Some are claiming that her nomination is nothing more than a plot constructed by Putin to divide the liberal votes.
In recent years, the world has seen its share of unusual candidates that have turned into politicians. In Russia, TV personality Ksenia Sobchak was recently nominated by the Civil Initiative Party as its candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
The 35-year-old from Saint Petersburg is also a journalist, reality host and actress. While her father is considered one of the people who mentored Vladimir Putin 20 years ago as he began to advance in Moscow’s political system, she is now challenging Russia's current president. According to her, she could be the first liberal female president of Russia. Sobchak has also promised that she will lead a fight against corruption.
The opposition Progress Party’s Alexei Navalny slammed the announcement of Sobchak’s nomination, claiming that it is nothing more than a gimmick or plan devised by Putin in order to divide the liberal votes. However, Sobchak claims that she truly intends to lead a campaign that promises to counter the conservative ways of Moscow.
The presidential election in Russia is set for March 2018. However, regardless of whether or not Sobchak’s nomination is just a gimmick, Putin is expected to win the election and begin his fourth term.
