The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that four cruise missiles were fired at ISIS targets in Palmyra, Syria. The missiles were fired from Russian Navy warships in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Russian frigate Admiral Essen and the submarine Krasnodar were the vessels from which the missiles were fired toward the Syrian city. Moscow added that the U.S., Turkish and Israeli militaries were informed beforehand of the strike.

Russia is a major ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Along with Tehran, Russia has been aiding the Syrian president in his fight against the various rebel groups and ISIS in his country over the past few years.
