Today (Wednesday), the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it will be sending its flagship aircraft carrier in order to reinforce the country’s troops near Syria’s coast.

The Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier is capable of carrying more than 40 modern Sukhoi-33 and MiG-29 fighter jets along with 20 attack and transport helicopters. According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu, the ship will soon join Russia’s naval forces in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

“The Russian fleet’s involvement in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea includes no less than six battle ships and three to four support instruments,” the minister explained. “We want to enhance the fleet’s abilities and therefore, the Admiral Kuznetsov is on its way there.”
