Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed his foreign minister Sergei Lavrov to sue the United States government for searching Russian diplomatic missions within US territory and for confiscating diplomatic equipment, the Kremlin spokesperson said Tuesday.

Earlier this week, Putin warned that he intended to take legal action following the "illegal inspection" of property owned by the Russian government. He added that Moscow reserved the right to cut the number of American diplomats in Russia in response to what he called "the rude treatment of Russian diplomats in the United States."

On Saturday, the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned a US diplomat in Moscow and handed him a letter of protest concerning the US’ plan to search the soon-to-be closed Russian trade mission complex in Washington, D.C. The Russians asserted in the letter that this is “an illegal inspection of a diplomatic compound” and called the measure “an unprecedented aggressive and violent act.”
