Watch: Protests in Istanbul, last night
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the decision of the Turkish people needs to be respected and the world needs to accept that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will be granted more powers and authority. “This is a domestic Turkish matter,” Peskov told reporters who asked him about the referendum results.
France, however, seems reluctant to accept the referendum results. According to French President François Hollande’s office, the referendum revealed that there are great divisions within Turkish society. France urged the Turkish government to begin a dialogue between the sides in the political system.

“Only the Turks can decide how to organize their political institutions but the referendum results show that Turkish society is deeply divided about the planned reforms,” the statement released by Hollande’s office read. In a different statement, the French Foreign Ministry urged the government in Ankara to respect the European Convention on Human Rights, especially when it comes to the ban on the death penalty.
Meanwhile, Turkey is contemplating whether to extend the state of emergency, which has been in effect since the failed coup attempt in July 2016, in light of the protests within the country following the referendum. According to Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli, the option will be reviewed and presented to Erdoğan during an upcoming cabinet meeting.
