US President Donald Trump has invited Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart, to visit the White House, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.

Russian news agency RIA Novosti quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying Trump made the invitation during a phone conversation with Putin on March 20. Trump, according to Lavrov, repeated the invitation a number of times during the call.

Lavrov added that the two leaders agreed never to allow an armed confrontation between their two countries to take place and claimed the US strike did not cross Russia's "red lines" regarding Syria.

The reported invitation comes amid high tensions between Russia and the West over last week's US strike in Syria. If Putin accepts it, it will be the two leaders' first meeting in Washington.
