Eight bodies and 30 people were discovered in a tractor-trailer early Sunday morning in a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio. The survivors were weak and dehydrated. The driver was arrested and will most likely be indicted for, among other things, human smuggling. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus described the incident as “a horrific tragedy.”

McManus said that a Walmart employee called the local police department after a man who was traveling in the tractor-trailer asked him for a glass of water. The police chief said that the employee gave the man water and then contacted the police. “Fortunately, we came across this one and fortunately, there are people who survived but this happens all the time,” he added.

Investigators are trying to figure out from where the truck was traveling and whether people managed to escape while it was parked. The tractor-trailer’s air conditioning was not working and the temperatures outside were very high.
