Secret tapes of Princess Diana: ‘I was so depressed and I was trying to cut my wrists’

In 1991, when her marriage with Prince Charles was falling apart, the late Princess Diana recorded herself speaking about her hardships and suicidal thoughts just a few weeks after getting married. “I was so depressed and I was trying to cut my wrists with razor blades.” Diana talks about her battle with bulimia in the tapes that she sent to author Andrew Morton and now the tapes have been released for the first time.

25 years ago, the British royal family experienced one of the worst crises it had ever faced - royal subjects were reading and quoting Andrew Morton’s book “Diana: Her True Story.” Within the book, frantic revelations were uncovered such as the royal family ignoring Princess Diana’s bulimia and her husband’s affair with Camilla Parker, who is now Prince Charles’ wife. The book describes how Charles and Camilla’s relationship began prior to Diana’s marriage to the prince and continued unhindered despite her presence. Today (Monday), the transcripts that revealed the true depths of the crisis were published – in Princess Diana’s words.

According to the transcript published by the Daily Mail, which is heading the book’s new release, Charles sent Camilla a bracelet with a romantic engraving just a few days prior to his wedding with Diana. “The first thing that hit me was my (future) husband sending Camilla Parker Bowles flowers when she had meningitis,” Diana said. “I once heard him on the telephone in his bath on his hand-held set saying: ‘Whatever happens, I will always love you.’” Diana stated that she and Charles had an awful argument after overhearing him.

The princess said that she forced herself to quickly lose weight before the wedding, but the thinner she got, the more depressed she became and she lost her will to live. According to the Daily Mail, Diana revealed that she tried to commit suicide just a few weeks after her wedding while the royal couple was in Scotland. “We stayed up there (at Balmoral) from August to October,” Diana said. “I got terribly, terribly thin. People started commenting: ‘Your bones are showing.’ By October, I was in a very bad way. I was so depressed and I was trying to cut my wrists with razor blades. It rained and rained and rained.”
