Senior AfD official claims far right-wing party ‘represents Israel’ in Bundestag

In light of the concerns among the German Jewish community after the far right-wing AfD party became the third largest party in the Bundestag, a senior AfD official rejected the possibility of the party endangering the Jewish population. “Many German Jews actually voted for the AfD,” he claimed.

After the success of the far right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the recent general election, many claimed that the nationalistic aspirations of the party endanger minorities in Germany. The Jewish population in Germany is especially concerned due to statements that were made by senior party officials ahead of the election. However, in an exclusive interview with Channel 2 Online, a senior AfD official said: “The Jews have nothing to worry about.”

The Jewish population in Germany was outraged when senior AfD official Björn Höcke called a Holocaust memorial in Berlin “a monument of shame” and stated that the German public needs to be prouder of its history, including the period of the Nazi regime.

After the election, Channel 2 News reached out to Dr. Götz Frömming, a senior AfD member and one of the party’s parliament members, asking him how the party views the Jewish population and whether Israel should expect to see a change in Germany’s attitude toward the country now that the AfD holds seats in the Bundestag.

Frömming, an expert on German history, responded: “The Jews don’t need to be worried at all. Why would the Jews be worried? Many German Jews actually voted for the AfD. Some of them are even members of the party.”

Frömming added that the real danger for the Jewish people in Germany, just like the rest of the citizens of the country, is related to the Muslim refugees. When asked whether Germany’s treatment of Israel will change in light of the AfD becoming the third largest party in the Bundestag, he said: “Yes! I hope it will be for the better. The AfD represents Israel, which is the only democracy in the Middle East, and every country’s right to defend itself.”
