Spain’s high court issued an arrest warrant Thursday for ousted Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, who is currently in Belgium along with four other sacked Catalan cabinet members, after he failed to appear for a hearing.
Puigdemont’s lawyer said that the situation in Spain is not good and that his client wanted to distance himself from it. However, he clarified that Puigdemont plans to fully cooperate with the authorities. Meanwhile, the Spanish court decided that the Catalan leaders who have already been arrested will remain in the authorities’ custody until the end of the investigation.
Earlier this week, Puigdemont held a press conference in Brussels and clarified that he did not flee to Belgium in order to receive political asylum. Puigdemont commented on the reports about the Spanish state prosecutor’s plan to file an indictment against him, saying that he will not run away from justice. He also called for a dialogue between the Madrid and Barcelona.
