Syrian infant who lost eye in artillery attack inspires social media solidarity campaign

From sports stars to diplomats, people all over the world are participating in an online campaign to express solidarity with a two-month-old Syrian baby who lost an eye in an artillery attack.

Karim Abd al-Rahman, a Syrian baby who lost an eye in an artillery attack, has become an inspiration for a viral social media campaign, in which people post selfies of themselves covering one eye to express solidarity with the victims of the ongoing civil war in Syria.

Among those who have taken part in the campaign are Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Bayern Munich soccer player Franck Ribéry and British Ambassador to the UN Matthew Rycroft.

According to a medical organization, Karim and his mother were at a crowded market in Ghouta when the attack began. His mother was reportedly killed.

"The atrocities experienced by the children of Ghouta are indescribable," said a Syrian humanitarian aid organization chief. "Karim's story is only one of many stories that could have been avoided. The international community should be ashamed. This must stop now."
