41-year-old Colette Sulcer from Houston was driving through Harvey floodwaters with her 3-year-old daughter Tuesday in Beaumont. Due to the high waters, Sulcer parked her car and the two started to head to safety on foot.

However, the waters were too high and powerful and swept them away. Sulcer lifted her daughter's head above the water in order to save her but unfortunately drowned in the process.

Rescue forces found Sulcer's body less than a kilometer from her car. Her daughter was holding on to her. The daughter is currently being treated for hypothermia at a hospital.

Spokeswoman for the Beaumont Police Department Carol Riley said that Sulcer's actions “absolutely saved the child’s life.”

“They were in the water for quite some time,” Riley said. “When the baby was found, the baby was clinging to her. The mother did the best she could to keep her child up over the water.”
