Female keeper killed by tiger at zoo outside Cambridge in 'freak accident'

A female keeper at the Hamerton Zoo near Cambridge, UK, was killed Monday morning by a tiger that entered its enclosure with her. The zoo is calling the incident a “freak accident” and has stated that no animals escaped and public safety was not affected.

A female keeper at the Hamerton Zoo near Cambridge, UK, was killed by a tiger Monday morning after it entered its enclosure with her, according to a Facebook post uploaded by the local police. "This appears to have been a freak accident," said the zoo, which has opened an investigation.

"At no point during the incident did any animals escape their enclosures," said the zoo in its press release. "And at no point was public safety affected in any way."

The zoo stated its staff is “too distressed to speak directly to the media” following their colleague’s death and as a result, the zoo will be closed today (Tuesday).

Tigers have been at the Hamerton Zoo since 2001 and are a popular attraction among visitors.
