U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson commented on the decision of four Arab countries to break off their diplomatic ties with Qatar, saying that this move will most likely not affect the fight against terrorism. “We certainly would encourage the parties to sit down together and address these differences,” Tillerson stated.

During his visit to Australia, Tillerson told reporters: “I do not expect that this will have any significant impact, if any impact at all, on the unified - the unified - fight against terrorism in the region or globally.” Earlier today, JOL reported that Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the UAE announced that they will sever their ties with Qatar over Doha’s links to terrorism. Saudi Arabia even urged other countries to follow suit.

In response, the Qatari Foreign Ministry stated that the decision is “unjustified and based on accusations and claims that have no factual basis.” A senior Iranian official tweeted that this decision “is not the solution to the crisis in the Middle East.”

About two weeks ago, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke to Muslim leaders at a summit in Riyadh. During his speech, Trump commented on the fight against terrorism and called on all the countries to unite in order to defeat the extremism and terrorist groups. “Young Muslim boys and girls should be able to grow up free from fear, safe from violence and innocent of hatred,” Trump explained. “And young Muslim men and women should have the chance to build a new era of prosperity for themselves and their peoples.”
