Watch: Trump announces his decision to pull out of Paris agreement
After many heads of state criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate deal, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reassured the world that his country will continue to take steps to combat global warming issues. Tillerson promised that America will continue to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions despite Trump’s announcement.
“It was a policy decision and I think it’s important that everyone recognize the United States has a terrific record on reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions,” Tillerson added. “That was done in the absence of a Paris agreement. I don’t think we’re going to change our ongoing efforts to reduce those emissions in the future either, so hopefully people can keep it in perspective.”
According to various reports over the past few weeks, Tillerson advised Trump to remain in the agreement so that Washington can maintain its leading position in the international discussions about combating climate change.
Earlier today, JOL reported that senior Chinese and European Union officials announced that their countries will remain committed to the agreement and united in the fight against global warming. The Indian government also announced that it will continue to uphold the agreements that have been signed on the issue.
