Top Republican politician Steve Scalise injured in Virginia shooting

At least five people, including a top Republican politician, were injured when a gunman opened fire in Virginia. The Republican Congressman is said to be in critical condition. Police have the shooter in custody.

Republican Congressman Steve Scalise was shot on Wednesday morning on a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia. American news agencies are reporting that Scalise is in critical condition after undergoing surgery. The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation. The shooter shot a total of five people: Scalise, Scalise’s aide, a member of Texas Rep. Roger Williams’ staff and two Capitol Hill police agents.

According to reports, the shooter fired between 50 and 100 rounds using a semi-automatic weapon. Republican Congressman Mo Brooks told CNN that Scalise was injured in his hip. According to a police tweet, the suspect is in custody.

Brooks stated that between 15 and 25 lawmakers were on the field when the shooting began. Accompanying them were security personnel and at least 12 aides.

The White House announced that U.S. President Donald Trump has been made aware of the situation. “The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely,” Trump said in a statement issued after the White House’s announcement. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress.”
