During a press conference in Vietnam Sunday, US President Donald Trump said that a friendship could develop one day between himself and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “That might be a strange thing to happen but it’s a possibility,” he stated when asked by a reporter whether he could see himself being friends with the ruler of the pariah state.

Trump added that it would be “very, very nice” to have a good relationship with Kim. “If it did happen it could be a good thing I can tell you for North Korea, but it could also be good for a lot of other places and be good for the rest the world,” he continued.

On Saturday evening, Trump tweeted about Kim after the North Korean Foreign Ministry called the US president a “dotard” and denounced his Asia tour. “Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old,’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat?’ Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend - and maybe someday that will happen!” Trump wrote.

Last week, Trump sent an explicit message to Pyongyang and Kim while he spoke in front of South Korean lawmakers in Seoul. “The weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer,” he said. “They are putting your regime in grave danger. Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face.”

“The regime has interpreted America’s past restraint as weakness,” he continued. “This would be a fatal miscalculation. This is a very different administration than the United States has had in the past. Today, I hope I speak not only for our countries, but for all civilized nations, when I say to the North: Do not underestimate us and do not try us.”
