Today (Wednesday), US President Donald Trump rejected the possibility of diplomatic talks with North Korea. “The US has been talking to North Korea and paying them extortion money for 25 years,” Trump tweeted. “Talking is not the answer!”

However, shortly after, Defense Secretary James Mattis clarified that the US still has more diplomatic solutions to the North Korean crisis. In addition, the US called for an international effort against the country’s nuclear program. “The world has received North Korea’s latest message loud and clear,” Trump said in a statement yesterday. “This regime has signaled its contempt for its neighbors, for all members of the United Nations, and for minimum standards of acceptable international behavior.”

According to a congressional report, between 1995 to 2008, the US has provided North Korea with over 1.3 billion dollars in aid. A little over 50% was for food and approximately 40% was for energy. The assistance was provided as part of a nuclear deal, which was then violated by North Korea. Since the beginning 2009, the aid has almost completely ceased.

As reported earlier by JOL, North Korea released footage of the latest ballistic missile test it carried out, which drew waves of condemnation throughout the world.
