On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said he believes that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, is sincere when he denies the accusations that his country meddled in the 2016 US election. But a day later, Trump seemed to contradict himself, saying he accepts the opinion of US intelligence agencies that Russia did try to meddle in the election.
Speaking to reporters in the Air Force One press cabin on Saturday, Trump said Putin seems "insulted" by the accusations, adding that "he means it."
Republican senator John McCain slammed Trump's comments and said, "There's nothing ‘America First’ about taking the word of a KGB colonel over that of the American intelligence community."
During a joint press conference with Vietnam's President Tran Dai Quang on Sunday, Trump attempted to clear up confusion, saying Putin "believes is what he believes."
"As to whether I believe it or not, I’m with our agencies," he added.
