Less than a day after US President Donald Trump threatened North Korea with “fire and fury” and a few hours after North Korea threatened back with talk of an attack on Guam, the president issued another backhanded warning to the isolated state.

Today (Wednesday) over Twitter, Trump revealed that his first order as president had been to upgrade the US’ nuclear arsenal, yet added that he hopes it will never be needed. ‘Hopefully we will never have to use this power, but there will never be a time that we are not the most powerful nation in the world!’

Trump’s unprecedented warning against North Korea came last night, a short while after The Washington Post’s initial report yesterday that North Korea has successfully built miniaturized nuclear warheads for its ICBMs.

"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen,” warned Trump. “He has been very threatening… and as I said they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before."

The Washington Post’s report came out quickly after North Korea threatened to take "justified actions" in response to a series of sanctions approved by the United Nations Security Council last weekend. According to the report, the assessment was completed last month following an additional intelligence analysis indicating a sharp increase in the amount of bombs found in the communist state’s arsenal.
