Police response during Florida Parkland shooting ‘disgusting,’ says Trump

After an inquiry revealed that the only armed officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland failed to enter the building as students were being shot, US President Donald Trump denounced the local sheriff’s department in a Monday statement. “I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon,” Trump said.

US President Donald Trump slammed on Monday the police response to the deadly Florida high school shooting, calling it a “disgrace.” The criticism came amid an inquiry launched into the response of Florida’s law enforcement, which revealed that police officer Scot Peterson, who was outside the school at the time of the massacre, remained outside as students were being shot.

“The way they performed was frankly disgusting,” Trump told US governors at a White House meeting. “I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon and I think most of the people in this room would have done that too.”

Pearson resigned last week after being suspended without pay. The former deputy has received widespread backlash after Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel accused him of doing “nothing” to prevent the shooting that left 17 dead.

“Let there be no mistake, Mr. Peterson wishes that he could have prevented the untimely passing of the 17 victims on that day, and his heart goes out to the families of the victims in their time of need,” said Peterson’s lawyer Joseph DiRuzzo III in a statement. “However, the allegations that Mr. Peterson was a coward and that his performance, under the circumstances, failed to meet the standards of police officers are patently untrue.”
