After sparking international outrage for reportedly calling African nations "shithole countries," US President Donald Trump has issued a letter to African leaders saying he "deeply respects" the continent and its people.

The letter was sent ahead of the African Union (AU) summit held this weekend in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, which gathered 55 nation leaders.

Two weeks ago, during a meeting with lawmakers on immigration at the Oval Office, Trump reportedly demanded to know why the US is allowing for people from "shithole countries" to enter the country, referring to Haiti, El Salvador and African nations.

Trump has denied using this language but has admitted that the meeting was "tough."
