US intelligence reports say North Korea has produced miniature nuclear warheadsAfter the UN Security Council voted to impose sanctions on North Korea following its continuous test launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles, US intelligence analysts reportedly assessed that North Korea has successfully built miniaturized nuclear warheads for its ICBM missiles.
The Washington Post reported Tuesday that according to a secret US intelligence report Pyongyang has successfully produced miniaturized nuclear warheads that can be loaded onto its intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), recently proved to be capable of reaching US territory.
The Washington Post’s report comes less than a day after North Korea threatened to take "justified actions" in response to a series of sanctions approved by the United Nations Security Council last weekend. “The IC [intelligence community] assesses North Korea has produced nuclear weapons for ballistic missile delivery, to include delivery by ICBM-class missiles,” stated the assessment which was reportedly verified by two US officials familiar with the document’s details.
According to the report, the secret assessment was completed last month following an additional intelligence analysis indicating a sharp increase in the amount of bombs found in the communist state’s arsenal. The US estimated last month that North Korea's dictator Kim Jong-un possessed up to 60 nuclear warheads. However, independent experts estimate that the amount is much smaller, though whether the regime has yet conducted successful tests of these new warheads, is still unknown.
The findings of this report are expected to deepen the West’s concerns about North Korea’s developing military threat, which appears to be advancing at a much higher rate than experts expected. US officials stated that Pyongyang was even exceeding expectations in its development of ICBM launch capabilities.
