Trump announces that US aid will only support American allies and supportersUS President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union speech on Tuesday evening, commenting on the Jerusalem embassy move, the Iran deal and US aid only going to America’s friends.
On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union to the American people, updating them on the progress of the nation under his administration. He spoke of making America great again, the successes of his administration, what his team looks forward to accomplishing during the remainder of his term and US foreign relations.
Trump mentioned his decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and declaring Jerusalem the capital of Israel. “Last month, I also took an action endorsed unanimously by the Senate just months before: I recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” he stated. He also spoke about the UN vote that took place following his declaration and the backlash from the international community.
He said, “Shortly afterwards, dozens of countries voted in the United Nations General Assembly against America's sovereign right to make this recognition. American taxpayers generously send those same countries billions of dollars in aid every year. That is why, tonight, I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to help ensure American foreign-assistance dollars always serve American interests, and only go to America's friends.”
Trump emphasized that America will not support its “adversaries.” He encouraged Congress to address the Iran nuclear deal, which he famously calls a “terrible” deal. He further addressed his support for the Iranian people and their call against “crimes of their corrupt dictatorship.”
