US President Donald Trump is analyzing a new strategy that would be more aggressive toward Iran and its proxy forces in Syria and Iraq, according to senior US officials. The sources said that the purpose of the new strategy is to pressure Tehran to put an end to its ballistic missile program.

According to the report, the plan was presented to Trump on Friday and it will likely be officially announced and implemented by the end of this month. Reuters reported that the proposal was prepared and presented by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and national security adviser H.R. McMaster.

The new strategy reportedly defines a number of broad long-term goals for the US Army while allowing the commanders in the field, diplomats and other officials to design their own tactical plans. In the years prior to Trump’s presidency, former President Barack Obama and other US presidents handed down specific instructions regarding the American policy toward Iran.

A senior official close to Trump explained that the strategy includes topics such as cyber espionage, cyber defense and possibly also nuclear proliferation. Meanwhile, the US government continues to debate how to address the nuclear agreement that was signed with Iran.
