Turkey warned on Wednesday that pro-Syrian regime forces entering the Afrin region become targets of the Turkish forces in the area, according to a Reuters report. Turkey has been operating against Kurdish militia’s in the northwest region for several weeks in an offensive it dubbed “Olive Branch.”
President Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin in a Wednesday press conference confirmed the reports that a pro-Syrian regime convoy came under Turkish artillery fire after attempting to enter the region on Tuesday. Kalin said that any similar step taken by the regime or other forces will have “serious consequences.”
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that Turkish airstrikes targeting areas in Afrin city overnight on Tuesday resulted in at least 6 injured people, among them 4 children. On Tuesday, Syrian government supporters and Kurds posted pictures of troops and militants entering the war-zone while waving Syrian flags. “The Syrian Army has responded to its duty and sent military forces to defend the unity of the Syrian people,” the Kurdish forces said in an official statement.
