As voting came to an end, Turkish media outlets began reporting today (Sunday) about the initial results of the referendum vote, in which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan requested to significantly expand his powers. Although the polls predicted that he would win a sweeping majority, Erdogan won with a majority vote of only 51.3% thereby expanding his powers and enabling him to remain in power until 2029.
55 million Turks of legal voting age are expected to determine by this evening whether or not Erdogan will be the leader with the most expansive power in modern Turkish history. According to estimates, the voting results will considerably affect Turkey’s diplomatic relations with the Western world, especially because of the country’s unique position within NATO and in absorption of Syrian refugees making their way to Europe.
Meanwhile, criticism from Turkish opposition officials have begun to surface, claiming suspicions of forging election results.
