Watch: NYPD makes violent arrest
UN, US embassy withdraw from Malawi due to vampire scareThe UN and the US embassy have withdrawn from several districts in southern Malawi due to a vampire scare. According to the UN, at least five people have been killed by local vigilante groups.
Yesterday, the United Nations (UN) announced that it has pulled out of two districts in southern Malawi due to a vampire scare. “These districts have severely been affected by the ongoing stories of blood sucking and possible existence of vampires,” the UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) stated.
The US embassy in the country has also decided to withdraw the Peace Corps volunteers from four districts and recommended that US citizens stay away because of “ongoing acts of vigilante justice stemming from rumors of persons attempting to steal blood from local residents for ritualistic use in so-called black magic or other nefarious purposes.”
According to the UNDSS, at least five people were killed by the local vigilante groups after being suspected of taking part in the blood-drinking rituals. Many in the lower classes in Malawi, who do not receive regular education, believe in witchcraft. This is not the first time that the country has suffered from the phenomenon.
In one incident, a local police officer was killed by a mob who accused him of collaborating with the vampires. However, the police chief clarified that there is no evidence of blood theft and no one has come forward to complain.
